Meet the Expert

A native of West Virginia, I am a graduate of Marshall University and received my DVM from The University of Georgia in 1987. After receiving my DVM, I completed an internship, dual residency in internal medicine and nutrition, a PhD, and a post-doctoral position at the University of Minnesota in 1994.  Following this, I joined the faculty at The University of Georgia and in 1997 joined the faculty at the University of Tennessee where I remained until 2015.  At Tennessee, I was Professor of Medicine and Nutrition, held the Acree Endowed Chair of Small Animal Research, and served as department head.  I was an internist, nutritionist, and academic director at Cornell University Veterinary Specialists in Stamford CT and an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Medicine at Cornell University.  I joined the faculty at The University of Georgia in 2016 and am currently Professor of Internal Medicine, Interventional Radiology, and Nutrition, and am the Bulldog Veterinary Medicine Professor in the Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery.  I am board certified in small animal internal medicine and nutrition, and I am a founding member of the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology. I have published 120 peer-reviewed publications, 100 research abstracts, 52 review articles, 104 textbook chapters, and edited 1 textbook.  I have been involved with 127 grants totaling $9.85M in research. My research and publications have been primarily in nephrology and urology and nutrition.
