Whether you are looking for a beautiful companion for your apartment or a friendly new addition to your bustling family, the Burmilla is a fantastic choice. Let’s explore the fascinating history, unique appearance, and daily care requirements of the Burmilla cat breed.
History: A Fortunate Mistake
Many purebred cats result from decades of careful planning. The Burmilla cat breed is the exact opposite. A happy accident created this stunning feline in the United Kingdom in 1981.
Baroness Miranda von Kirchberg owned two beautiful cats: a Lilac Burmese named Faberge and a Chinchilla Persian named Sanquist. The two cats were kept strictly separated while waiting for their respective breeding partners. One evening, a cleaner accidentally left a door ajar. Faberge and Sanquist quickly took advantage of the open door!
The resulting litter of four kittens shocked everyone. They possessed the short, dense coat of the Burmese, but it was tipped in sparkling silver like the Chinchilla Persian. They were so beautiful and possessed such wonderful temperaments that breeders immediately began a program to establish the Burmilla cat breed.
Appearance: Sparkling Coats and Eyeliner

The Burmilla is a medium-sized, muscular cat that feels surprisingly heavy for their size. Their most famous physical trait is their spectacular coat.
Every Burmilla has a pure silver-white undercoat. The tips of the hair are shaded or tipped in a contrasting color, such as black, blue, chocolate, or lilac. This “tipping” effect gives the coat a shimmering, sparkling appearance when the cat moves. While the shorthaired variety is the most common, the breed also produces semi-longhaired cats (often called Burmilla Longhairs), which feature a soft, flowing coat and a plumed tail.
Their faces are equally captivating. They possess large, luminous green eyes. A ring of dark coloring perfectly outlines their eyes, nose, and lips, making it look as though they are wearing expertly applied makeup or eyeliner!
Personality: The Perfect Middle Ground
The Burmilla cat breed inherited the very best personality traits from both of their parent breeds.
From the Burmese side, they inherited a playful, mischievous streak. They love interactive wand toys, enjoy climbing tall cat trees, and will happily follow you from room to room to see what you are doing. However, they lack the intense, demanding vocalizations that the Burmese breed is known for.
From the Chinchilla Persian side, they inherited a laid-back, gentle sweetness. When playtime is over, a Burmilla wants nothing more than to curl up in your lap and purr. They are highly adaptable cats that handle changes in routine beautifully, making them remarkably easy to live with.
Daily Care and Grooming
Keeping a Burmilla happy and healthy is relatively straightforward. Because they are moderately active, they require a high-quality, protein-rich diet to maintain their muscular build. Providing a mix of premium kibble and hydrating wet food helps protect their kidney and urinary health.
Grooming depends on the coat length you choose. A shorthaired Burmilla only needs a quick brushing once a week with a slicker brush to remove loose hair and distribute natural skin oils. If you bring home a semi-longhaired Burmilla, you must brush them two to three times a week using a metal comb to prevent painful mats and tangles from forming in their soft fur.
Like all cats, they need regular nail trims, daily litter box scooping, and sturdy scratching posts to keep their claws healthy.

How big do Burmilla cats get? They are a sturdy, medium-sized breed. Females typically weigh between 6 and 9 pounds, while males are noticeably larger, weighing between 9 and 13 pounds. They generally live long, healthy lives, averaging 13 to 15 years.
